How—if at all—has being in the adult industry changed your views about sex?
Practically speaking, I have far less sex now that I am doing porn than I did before I started. Only very rarely do I hook up. I don’t really date much because it is so complicated. For better or worse, it’s impossible to not see sex as work when it is your job. I talk with other guys who work in porn a lot about the difference between porn sex and sex off set. Mechanically the act may be the same (cock in ass) but substantially there is very often a huge difference even if there is a real attraction to your scene partner. In sex off set, I have rarely ever taken a break to eat a granola bar or stretch my hamstrings. Breaks are a normal part of filming a scene particularly if the position is very technical.
Personally, I have never been one to say, “it´s just sex.” Although, I certainly have had my share of hook ups and casual sex, sex has always held some sense of gravity for me. The gravity of what I do, when I allow myself to be filmed while having sex has never gone away nor decreased with the number of scenes that I have done. I have become more open in my willingness to speak very frankly about sex: my preferences and my experiences.
How—if at all—has your experience in porn changed your view of yourself?
I was a police officer and trained as a paramedic before I got into porn. I saw those jobs as very important- after all when I got up to go to work I was risking my life to save others. I took myself very seriously. I attached a great deal of my personal value to the jobs that I did. Porn, although it is a multibillion dollar industry, is difficult to attach such great importance to. Now when I go to work, my job is to fuck or get fucked, flex my abs, cum, and make it all look good so a studio can sell the scene or DVD. So, I’ve had to dig a little more deeply to find value in myself and in what I do. Writing about my experiences has helped a lot. Also, I am a perfectionist, so no matter what my job is, unless I totally despise it, I will give it 100% and be the very best that I can be at it.
Before I started doing porn, I saw myself as a slightly above average looking gay guy. That hasn’t really changed but doing porn has made it really hard to ignore the attention that I get. I’m typically a very shy person. Doing public appearances, meeting fans randomly, being in constant contact through Twitter and Facebook have all made me start to see myself less and less as a private person and more as a public figure, at least sometimes.
What—if anything—had you fantasized about that you got to experience thanks to your experience in porn?
I’m still waiting for porn to make my sexual fantasies come true. So far, that hasn’t happened yet.
What—if anything—in the porn industry do you want to experience that you’ve not already done?
I would really like to film more three ways and orgies. It seems like we don’t film a lot of these scenes in the US, my guess would be because of the cost involved. Although porn models in the US are not at all well paid, they are paid even more poorly in Europe so many of the super hot group sex scenes we see come from European porn producers like BelAmi, Kristen Bjorn, and Lucas Kazan.
Based on your interaction with fans, do people have any misconceptions about you? If so, what are they?
The single most common comment I hear from fans and other porn stars who I am meeting for the first time is, “You’re so much nicer than I thought you would be!” I guess it’s a compliment to be thought of as a nice person after a face to face meeting but it leaves me always wondering what it is that I do and say that make people think I am going to be an asshole in person.
Do you have a favorite type of scene partner—or a favorite scene partner—to work with?
I’ve had a lot of really great scene partners and I’ve gotten to work with some of today’s best performers. My favorite type of scene partner is one who is friendly, takes the work seriously, is open to direction and suggestions, is easy going and doesn’t complain, and is able to perform his role in the scene with ease and efficiency. The best scene partners, professionally, are not necessarily those to whom I am most attracted physically but sometimes. It is very nice when both of those things exist together- Topher DiMaggio (who is also a close friend) is one such example.
What—if anything—would you shy away from doing onscreen?
I won’t do on scene anything that I consider dehumanizing to myself or to another person. I realize that’s not a very specific answer and I mean it to be vague because this is something that I am constantly defining and redefining for myself. Part of what is interesting about working in porn is having your limits constantly questioned and tested.
How—if at all—has your porn career been effected by your non-porn career/job (or how has your non-porn career/job been effected by porn?
I don’t have a professional career at the moment and I’m not looking for one until I am done working in porn. Making porn is my fulltime job.
What is one thing about you that your fans might be surprised by?
I’ve noticed that I have two pretty distinct groups of fans: there are those who know me by my on scene work only and really know very little about me personally and there are those who, in addition to knowing my work in front of the camera, take the time to read my interviews, editorials, and blog entries. I’m pretty open in what I write, so the latter group would probably be pretty difficult to surprise.
I’m a shy, romantic, and sensitive guy. I cry at nearly every episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I think rough sex can certainly be hot sometimes but more often than not I like the romance of holding my partner gently as we make love. Anyone who knows me solely from my work on screen where there is a lot of spit on my hole, fuck me hard, slap my ass kind of sex going on would probably be pretty surprised to know what a sensitive and gentle guy I really am.
How—if at all—has your porn career affected your relationship?
I’ve made a couple unsuccessful attempts to have a relationship since I started working in porn. My guess is that I won’t be able to have a successful relationship until I’m done with my porn career or that, if I meet the right guy I’ll probably make my exit from porn pretty quickly.
Do you get recognized when you’re out in your home city?
I’m from a very small town in northern Idaho. I was at the grocery story during my last visit home and this kid came up to me and said very quietly, “I just want you to know how cool I think it is that a real gay porn star went to my high school.” I was surprised as hell that I got recognized there and I really appreciated that kid saying what he did. In places like West Hollywood or San Francisco, I expect to get recognized but in a small town in Idaho, it was a real, and pleasant surprise.
Where can your fans see your work?
I have my own website (JakeGenesis.com) where fans can see lots of hot photos, view previews of scenes, and read transcripts of interviews as well as articles that I have written. Additionally, they can see my work on the web sites of the many fine studios with which I have had the pleasure of working. I encourage everyone interested in my work to follow me on Twitter (@JakeGenesis) because that is my preferred method for communicating with fans and friends.
Also you can catch me fucking hot boys on cam on Randy Blue Live. Fans who don’t already have a membership to RandyBlue.com can get a free one and chat with me during the public portion of my show for free. If they want to see some skin and some action there are both private and voyeur chat features. I always promote my upcoming shows on Twitter.
